History

Intent

At St Mary’s Catholic Primary, our History curriculum is designed with clear intent: to help children develop a secure sense of the past and an understanding of how communities and societies have changed over time. We focus on age-appropriate topics that connect local, national, and wider world history, encouraging curiosity and respectful questioning. Through well-planned learning, children build historical knowledge while also strengthening key skills such as chronology, using sources, and explaining ideas in their own words.

Implementation

Our implementation is carefully structured to ensure lessons are engaging and progressive. Teachers select meaningful themes and learning experiences, including stories, artefacts, maps, timelines, and age-appropriate historical texts. Children learn to recognise similarities and differences between periods, and they are supported to use evidence when answering historical questions. Regular opportunities for discussion, reflection, and practical activities help pupils apply what they know and deepen their understanding over time.

Impact

The impact of our History teaching is seen in children’s growing confidence and enthusiasm for learning about the past. As pupils move through the school, they develop stronger historical vocabulary and a clearer understanding of cause and consequence. They also learn how History links to other areas of the curriculum, supporting literacy, geography, and personal development. By the time children leave St Mary’s, they have experienced a curriculum that builds knowledge, supports thoughtful participation, and prepares them for future learning.
